NHYTE research team is now bringing to light a new hybrid material made of PEI thermoplastic film and a composite made of PEEK and carbon fiber. At the beginning of the project an automated prototype equipment was designed and developed-being now fully operational- to produce stripes of the new hybrid material. These stripes are cut to obtain coils of tape and afterwards are placed in an Automated Tape Placement (ATP) machine to produce samples and parts. This ATP machine is located in the facilities of the Italian NOVOTECH in Avetrana, coordinator of the NHYTE project.
But the work doesn’t stop here. UBS researchers created also a numerical simulation of this process while the validation of the numerical model is planned to be performed through instrumented experiments. At the beginning of October 2019, tests were carried out jointly by UBS and NOVOTECH, at NOVOTECH premises with the aim to improve the reliability of the developed software.
The photos below show how project researchers implant thermocouples in the samples so as to enable them measure temperature fields in the deposition of layers of hybrid material.
